Welcome
Most activities in the School voor Filosofie are in Dutch. There are some exceptions, hence this page. For further information you are always welcome to e-mail us: info@schoolvoorfilosofie.nlQuiet Room
To develop the power to be still. This is the mission of the School voor Filosofie. 'To be still' is a condition to be open to new solutions and insights. It leads the way back to your essence and diminishes 'circling thoughts' - ideas and opinions, emotions, judgements, etc. - which hinder a clear view of the matter at hand.To express this mission we have established a quiet space, open to anyone. This Quiet Room is open seven days a week, from 8.30 am (subject to change) at P.C. Hooftstraat 183, Amsterdam - entrance through the Vondelpark.
English language philosophy group
Every so often the School is asked if it is possible to start a Philosophy Group in English. Once there are enough students we would like to start such a group. The School is oriented to a number of philosophical directions: Vedanta, Plato/Socrates and the Bible. With these three streams as a basis we then look at Zen, Tao, Krishnamurti, Ouspensky, Shakespeare, Ramana Maharshi, Dante or 'The Little Prince'. The principal question is to find out what philosophy means to us in our daily life. A typical philosophy course offers space to share your experiences. The meetings also include a silence exercise.
Those who are interested in joining an English Philosophy Group are asked to let us know. We will put your name on a waiting list (without any further obligations). Send us an e-mail with
- your name
- previous experience of a philosophy group or silence exercise
- possible suggestions for a group such as this.
As soon as we have enough names on the list and a tutor is available, we will get in touch with you about an introductory meeting.
Download books
Thanks to the Stichting Ars Floreat it is now possible to download a selection of philosophy books from the internet. Some of those books are in English.Ars Floreat originated from the School voor Filosofie. Various Dutch language books on www.arsfloreat.nl have in the past been translated by the School voor Filosofie and have been published on paper.
Art exhibition, tea room and shop
Our building at P.C. Hooftstraat 183 is open to all, seven days a week from 8.30 am. Hundreds of people visit every week, and not just to join courses or go to lectures. Thanks to a close association with Centrum de Roos the building also houses a tea room, art exhibitions, a small shop and - as mentioned above - a quiet room.Tea house 'La Tea en Rose' offers quite a bit more than just tea. It's opening times and photos of the unique Art Deco conservatory can be found on www.roos.nl/theehuis/theehuis.html.
The art exhibition committee of the School and De Roos each month offers space to artists to show their work in the building.

The small shop sells meditation cushions and seats, candles, incense, cd's, buddha's, (ayurvedic) skin care products, sounding bowls, etheric oils, cards, handmade indoor fountains, as well as a whole range of books.
P.C. Hooftstraat 183 is in Amsterdam - Zuid; the entrance is through the Vondelpark.
Research into Dutch Painting
How is it possible that, despite our use of state of the art modern technology, we can not or only faintly emulate Rembrandt or Vermeer? What is the connection between the Dutch Masters and the psoition of the stars and planets in the Dutch Golden Age? That is just what the students of astrolgy of the School of Filosofie in Amsterdam wanted to know. This led to scientific research at the Hindu University of America, in Florida, USA, an officially recognized American University. This research also incorporated the 'founding' date of the Netherlands and the birth date of William the Silent. The so called Jupiter Saturn conjunctions also play a significant role. Go to www.hindu-university.edu for a press release regarding this study.Further information: astrologie@schoolvoorfilosofie.nl
